What is the N-Back Task?
The n-back task is a working memory exercise where you watch a sequence of items and respond when the current
item matches the one from n steps earlier. In a 2-back task, for example, you compare the current position with
the position from two turns ago. It is widely used in cognitive psychology because it combines memory, attention,
and continuous updating. For more background, read our research overview on the
science of n-back training.
How to Play
1. Choose level: Start with 1-back or 2-back, then increase the level when your accuracy is
stable.
2. Start: Watch the square positions and press the match button when the current position
matches the one from n steps ago.
3. Track accuracy: Use your score and mistakes to decide whether to repeat the level or move
up.
