MANUAL

How to use this app

1. What the N-Back task is

Stimuli appear one after another, and you decide whether each one matches the one N steps back. The larger N is, the more you have to hold and update in mind. One session is 25 trials, about a minute.

Same position
A 2-Back example. Press only when the position matches the one two steps back (this demo plays automatically).

Steps

  1. Press "Quick training" or "Daily challenge" on the Home tab.
  2. Choose the level (N) and press "Start session".
  3. A stimulus appears every 2 seconds. Respond only when it matches N steps back.
  4. After 25 trials you get your results.

Controls

Press SPACE or tap the button. In Dual N-Back, position is SPACE and sound is A.

Scoring

Accuracy is the average of how often you correctly caught a match and how often you correctly withheld a response on a non-match. Pressing too often lowers your score, so when in doubt, do not press.

Tip: 1-Back or 2-Back is plenty at first. N rises automatically above 90% accuracy and drops below 75%.

2. How each mode works

Daily challenge (about 4 min)

The recommended daily menu: one warm-up, two main sessions and one challenge, back to back. These results drive your Working Memory Level, and the progress ("Daily challenge 1/4") is shown at the bottom of the screen.

Quick training (about 1 min)

A single session at your recommended level. The next N is adjusted from your result. On busy days this alone is enough.

Speed N-Back

The interval starts at 2.0s and shortens by 0.2s each time you score 90% or higher, down to 1.0s. Trains fast, stable responding.

Survival

You have three lives. Every false alarm or miss costs one, and the session ends at zero. This mode rewards precision.

Beat Your Best

Your personal best at the same N (accuracy and reaction time) is shown as a target before you start, and you try to beat it.

Number N-Back

Instead of positions, a digit appears in the centre and you judge whether it matches N steps back. This leans on verbal memory.

Audio N-Back

No grid is shown; you judge whether the pitch matches N steps back. Headphones recommended. Nothing plays if sound effects are off in Settings.

Dual N-Back

Track position and sound at the same time. Position matches use "Position match" (SPACE) and sound matches use "Audio match" (A); each is scored separately.

3. Reading your records

Working Memory Level runs from 1.00 to 6.50 and updates from the daily challenge and quick training sessions. Stats shows accuracy and reaction time over time; Achievements shows your rank and badges.

Records are stored only on this device. Clearing browser data deletes them. Add the app to your home screen to use it offline.

Short and daily beats long and rare. Making the daily challenge a habit is the fastest route.
